More Than a Century of History on the square
Francis M. Goodall purchased property on the northeast corner of North Market Street and The Public Square in 1872. One year later he built the only first-class hotel in Marion. It was a two-story building that sat above a basement. The family occupied half of the second floor as their residence. The original building was destroyed by fire in 1898.
After the fire, a new building was erected in 1900 and still stands today. Goodall built the first structure on the square wired for electricity.
Over the years, the Goodall 1900 building has been home to numerous businesses, doctors’ and lawyers’ offices, restaurants, and residential units. On the lower level of the building, Caldwell and Furlong’s lunch counter was the first restaurant to open at 103 North Market Street. In 1916, J.L. Robinson opened the GEM Cafe in that spot. It’s location and proximity to the town square and Williamson County Courthouse proved to be very beneficial. In 1939, two brothers, Achillas and Ikie Karathanos took over the GEM cafe. After, Achillas’ death in 1965, his brother sold the restaurant to local businessman and restauranteur Wayland Sims. The Uptowner Restaurant and Lounge became the new gathering place. Throughout the 80s and 90s other restaurants such as Pierson’s, Stewarts, and a Bavarian House Restaurant occupied that location.
JM VISION LLC real estate development company purchased the property in May of 2000 and immediately began a complete top to bottom renovation. In 2023 two thirds of the renovation of this historic building was completed with Granny Puckett’s and Milkweed Provisions occupying the main level and four, luxury one-bedroom apartments on the second floor. The lower level has an additional 5,000 square feet of space being developed.
