End of Shift
by Shawn Vincelette
The Mural District located in the historic downtown section of Marion, Illinois is the heartbeat of the city’s art scene. Each mural was created by local and international artists and is easily accessible by foot.
The mural located on the west side of the Goodall Building is a must-see when visiting the downtown. From its commanding position along the northern entrance to Marion's Town Square, the mural titled, "End of Shift" pays silent tribute to the countless souls who risked life and limb working in Southern Illinois coal mines.
Designed by artist Shawn Vincelette in 2021. The mural's location along North Market Street was key to the design. With a bit of imagination, the enclosed cavernous space between the Goodall building and the new City Hall structure is meant to represent being within an enclosed underground coal mine.
Utilizing the feeling one gets entering the openness of the Square from North Market St, the direction of movement within the creation pays homage to the feeling of relief miners must have experienced each time they returned to the surface after a long shift underground.
"End of Shift" is one of half of a dozen large scale public works of art Shawn Vincelette has contributed to the city's mural district since 2019. An opportunity for the artist to give back to the community that cultivated and supported his earliest artistic pursuits.
